5 out of 5 stars extra veg inspiration   August 7, 2008
As a compulsive cook book buyer/collector/hoarder this was too good to miss, based on previous reviews I went ahead and bought this book and was not at all disappointed.
Some recipes are familiar and therefore comforting and others provide new ideas and inspiration, so much so I resorted to pilfering handfuls of lemon verbena leaves from my mother's shrub in order to try out the Verveine Sorbet recipe to much success.
This is a 'must have' cook book, the recipes are beautifully laid out and very clear, it is not a book for the complete beginner or unadventurous cook. If you simply enjoy food, cooking and browsing through recipes then this book is for you. The photographs and colourful design enhance this pleasurable experience and is excellent value for money as well as making a gorgeous present for a foodie.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic - all-year-round use   August 5, 2008
I bought this book for my mum earlier in the year, and borrowed it so many times I decided I needed a copy for myself!

It's fantastically laid out (I'm in the book layout business myself, and know a good one when I see one!) Really easy to use, full of great ideas for both gluts from the garden or those buy-one-get-one-free offers from the supermarket.

It's now permanently to hand in the kitchen (not one of those look through it once and put it away kind of books), each section being for the different seasons means it's going to be used all year round.

The only problem is now that I'm inspired to grow all sorts of things next year, so might need a bigger garden!

5 out of 5 stars Treat with care   July 21, 2008
This is a fantastic book, especially for anyone with an overabundant allotment, but not for the beginner cook. You will need to have an idea of what you are making before you start as I find some of the quantities are a bit out - for the delicious spinach tart, serves 6, she recommends making a pound of pastry (I made it fine with 8oz) and the blackcurrant cupcake icing would have iced 40 cakes, not the 11 the recipe made!

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one cookbook make it this one!   June 5, 2008

I was given this book as a gift and since then I have bought it for three friends. It really is the best cookbook on by shelf.

I have not made one recipe from it that did not turn out fantastically well - and there's a fantastic combination of modern and old fashioned recipes, quick and easy and more complicated meals.

I don't have a garden or an aga or a double oven or any fancy cooking equipment and it is quite usable for the urban cook! There are so many brilliant recipes that it would be quite possible to cook just from this book all year long.

Also the book is so pretty, brightly coloured with two bookmark ribbons that it makes an ideal gift.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, no-nonsense cookbook   May 6, 2008

I picked this up to cheer myself up and try to encourage myself to cook more healthy, seasonal meals. As a busy teacher, the Garden Cookbook appealed because of its no nonsense style- there's no waffle, just several recipes to a page, accompanied by some gorgeous photography.

I've wasted money on cookery books before, but this one really does offer something different- not only is it eye-candy, but it is easily accessible.
As I come from E. Sussex, it also couldn't be much more local- the recipes use the fruit and veg that can be grown in the UK climate, not exotic, imported items, and offer suggestions for many of the more unfamiliar items that have cropped up in my veg box from time to time. Who knew you could cook lettuce? Certainly not me!

So far I've only cooked one recipe- the crushed new potatoes, but they were fabulous (and fabulously easy...) and will become a staple recipe.
